About Tawang, Bhismaknagar

Tawang is a town in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, situated 448 km north-west of state capital Itanagar at an elevation of approximately 3,048 metres (10,000 ft). The town once served as the district headquarters of West Kameng district and became the district headquarters of Tawang district when it was formed from West Kameng.

Bhismaknagar is an important ancient archeological site. It was built by a Chutia king during the 8th century and late rebuilt by another Chutiya king named Gaurinarayan. Bhismaknagar must have been a stronghold of the Chutias. The ruins have been dated between the 11th-15th centuries. Bhismaknagar has been identified with Sadhayapuri, the political center of the Chutiya Kingdom. It was probably repaired by the Chutia king Lakshminarayan as bricks with the name Sri Lakshmi-Narayana were found on the site. Being located along the bank of river Kundli, it was also popularly known as Kundilnagara.
